I downloaded this kernel from penguinppc.org/~benh. I think I got all the
config done right for my machine. The kernel seemed to work fine as far as
the exiting X problem. I had no problems at all. The 2.4 kernel really is
incredibly fast. One problem though, my damn PPP still won't work. In fa
Actually that was someone else. My install said it worked fine on all the
RPMs. I had one dependecy that it requested off CD 1 which seemed to go okay.
I was booting fine just the leaving X problem. Just to try it, i did the

I remember right. This particular kernel has usb-ohci and the
keyboard/mouse built-in, so unless you have "/" on a scsi drive, you can
probably get away without it. You can make your own initrd with the
command:

I wonder if my shutdown and reboot problem may be related to the other
problems being discussed. I tried force installing the package discussed but
still having problems. Would there be some other config that needs doing
after the installation.
Another question i have arises from what is in /b
OK, all you have to do to fix that is do a forced reinstall of the
initscripts package on disc 1. My 2.4.4 runs great now. I still wonder
why it didn't install with the rest of the stuff in that package... oh
well.

Stew,
The error I got said that
/usr/share/loader//make-initrd
was not installed. With 2 slashes
I'm kind of surprised you would be missing that file, as it's part of the
initscripts:
[stew@imac stew]$ rpm -qif /usr/share/loader/make-initrd
Name: initscripts Relocations: (not relocateable)
Version : 5.83 Vendor: MandrakeSoft
Release

ls /usr/share/loader/ ? rpm -V initscripts ?
"Can't open perl script "/usr/share/loader//make-initrd": No such file or
directory" is the exact message I get when I try and install the RPM.
any clues as to a fix?

I have had a problem now. I am getting a hard freeze when I try to logout of
a kdm session. W
That's good news - the symlinks don't change in /boot, but you should have
gotten a new entry in /etc/yaboot.conf.

I downloaded and installed the rpm kernel files. They successfully installed
(one dependency that was on cd #2). I rebooted and it was still showing the
old kernel so I updated the symbolic links in /boot that hadn't been changed
(not sure if that was supposed to have been done by the install o

I tried installing the kernel-2.4.4 rpm, and it gave me the message that
it could not find the perl script /usr/local/share//mkinitrd or
something of that nature (I'm booted into MacOS right now so I don't
have the exact error). Is this gonna cause problems if I try and use the

I downloaded Kernel 2.4.4 from the cooker ftp. I am unable to use use
the DVD-ROM drive on my G4 sawtooth with this kernel. Every time I try
to mount a cd (or even use the eject command) the process locks up and
control C won't even stop it. Has anyone else had this problem?
