Hi all, just a quickie here: our space is featured this week in the
local online weekly magazine, Concentrate. Our model is a membership
model (as opposed to desk rental) so we may look a little different
than you're used to.

Enjoy!
Oh hi!
I'm Laura and I designed the NAE site. My friend Bill Tozier wrote the
poetic piece that appears on the front page. He and his wife Barbara
supplied most of the vintage equipment I photographed and used in the
design.
The blog was unfortunately hacked late last year and we just took it
Some of the members at Workantile here have built out an RFID system
for the doors (using Arduino, I think). Right now, it just opens the
doors for keyholders, but they're building out the software to allow
for some more sophisticated usage. They're talking about doing some
'nights-weekends' only
Workantile Exchange is in a street level space, which allows us to
partner with a coffee shop which sublets a portion of the space
closest to the street. That kind of partnership with a retail entity
probably wouldn't work anywhere but ground level.
A lot of people who come into the coffee shop
You know, I hesitated to post about using the Twitter list; I thought
it was a kind of obvious idea. I'm so glad I did, though - found out
about the list widget from Alex and Jonathan, your member list is a
brilliant implementation, too.
I know we're always looking for ways to do this coworking
Hi there! Workantile Exchange in Ann Arbor is about 6 months old now
and although we're not at full membership capacity yet, we're getting
closer. One of the things we're trying to tackle is fostering a sense
of community among the members (40+ right now) and I thought I'd share
our latest idea,
At Workantile, we have a couple bar-height round tables. They're nice
to work at - feels a bit different than 'regular' tables, which
encourages looking at your work a little differently, which can be
nice when you feel like you're in a rut.
Only downside is stability; the tall tables can feel a
Hi Raines!
I don't know how I missed your reply - I'm just seeing it today, many
days later. Sorry!
I know that the town has its own independent economy, but I'm curious if
you're seeing regional fallout from the Detroit collapse, in people's
perception of business opportunity... and
Kevin - thanks for this, we had been looking for a system we could get
up and running RIGHT NOW and Divvy seems super cool, and we may just
continue using it regardless.
Jenny - thanks for the email; we're still totally running around
putting out fires as we open, but Divvy is looking super and
More pictures up now, and the coffee kiosk opens today or maybe
tomorrow. We're so excited. http://workantileexchange.com/gallery.html
We're getting a lot of walk-ins wanting to rent the conference room.
Do any of you find that to be a dominant request in your areas?

Hi all! Just a quick note to let you know that Workantile Exchange
will be opening in Ann Arbor next week. A lot of work has been poured
into the space by lots of people, most notably by founder Mike
Kessler, and we're very excited to see the doors finally opening.

Oops - realized I didn't introduce myself:
I'm Laura Fisher, and I do freelance web design. I live in Ann Arbor
and I'm on the advisory board of Workantile Exchange. I'm also a
member of Not An Employee, which is a loosely organized group aimed at
promoting project-driven careers in SE Michigan.
The coffee kiosk is subletting the space. It doesn't fully subsidize
the rent on the whole space by any means, but it certainly helps. This
is their first physical location, but they've been roasting for some
time now. They'll have some outdoor seating, but mostly it's a 'to go'
coffee counter.
Are you working with the folks building LaunchPad in Austin?

We're trying to gauge interest in developing a permanent dedicated
coworking space in downtown Ann Arbor. This might include shared
office space, meeting and training space, a private cafe, a makers'
den for electronic and other fabrication projects. Any or all of
those. The space might be run by
