libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental and now empathy works. And now I get ~35 frames
per second with Extreme TuxRacer.

An extra data point, I installed mapivi from svn (see
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mapivi/develop), and that version has all the
correct buttons on the Add comment and Edit comment windows. This would seem to
imply that the problem is not due to my version of perl-tk. (I modified
mapivi.pl
I downloaded mapivi097.tar.gz from sourceforge. On my machine this
version is missing the buttons as well.

I compiled the 2.6.29-rc5 kernel using the config from
/boot/config-2.6.26-1-686 (I just changed the processor to Core 2). When
I booted this kernel it hung when starting hal. I reset the machine
and booted in single user mode. I then ran
hal works fine with linux 2.6.28.

My Canon USB scanner has been working fine for ages but does not work
with linux-image-2.6.20-1-686. xsane detects the scanner and when asked
to scan thinks that the scanner is working however the scanner does not
react and
Libsane bug number 419197 is interesting here as scanimage does in fact
work even with 2.6.20-1-686. Perhaps the problem is in libsane but
upgrading libsane to 1.0.19~cvs20070421-1 has not corrected the problem.
