There are a number of non-portable idioms in the test scripts:
- "tar -z" is only supported by GNU tar, whose name we cannot depend on
(when it is available, it is usually called gtar everywhere but on
GNU-based platforms)
- I know $(...) is POSIX, and I do find this syntax invaluable compared to

Well, I messed up things somewhat, refering to the badram bug in the
nfs-ngroups upload, and not tagging the badram changelog with the bug.
I have uploaded badram 2.6.11.3-1 with the patches from the badram
site (not 2.6.9 since that kernel starts to get old)

Hm, indeed it seems that the shipped patches are not needed any more
to implement ghost mode, despite what the doc says. However, the 2.4
patch seems to have a fix for ghost mode (which may well be related to
#310452), so the patches may be worth packaging anyway.

Features like ghosting are only available through the kernel patch, which
is even not available in the autofs package. The most user-friendly way
to provide it would be in a specific package, possibly built with the help
of dh-kpatches.
