(archive.netsccape.com or something) where I can download the
netscape software.
Unfortunately, when I try and access that URL via ftp I cannot get
in, it won't let me.

I had to install dhcpcd on my bare Hamm system to access the Ethernet
here, and it worked perfectly, so I don't think it is broken. You might
try installing the netbase package, and anything else that it has
dependancies on.
