I'm guessing that it's a "straight through" cable and it may not care if it's serial or parallel or whatever. Just ohm it out and see if pin 2 on the female side is connected to pin 2 on the male side, etc. If everything is pin for pin on at least pins 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,20 then you're good to go.
