I think Himanshu's initial question (and Olgu's follow up) reflects a common
need within the design community, specifically among experienced / working
designers, many of whom got into IxD without formal training. If I look closely
at the initial query from Himanshu I see:

PINs are sometimes used on the web (I've seen this in IVRs too) in combination
with another piece(s) of personal information. See Delta.com for an example.
Out of curiousity, does any know why we aren't using PIN numbers as internet
passwords? A huge percentage of people already have a banking
Todd,
We use structured interviews, focus groups, and visits with SMEs / end users --
questionnaires only if it's a repeated thing and they're already designed,
otherwise free response generally yields richer data and are less tedious to
design and analyze.

Interesting, I didn't know online HCI grad programs even existed.
On a related note, I do wish that a premier design school (e.g. RISD, Art
Center, SVA, New School, CMU) would step up and address the need for online /
part-time IxD executive MFA program for practitioners, along the executive
and living on loans and getting the
degree in 2 years, do it. Having the mental freedom to think wide and deep is
worth it in the long run.

Dave,
Is it really that different in large corporations and even design firms working
with remote clients? We're not talking about BFA programs / inexperienced
designers but graduate design education for folks already working in the field
(hence executive), which is a different niche /
Hi Jesse,
This is exactly why I eschewed a pure design education back in the late 90s,
both as an undergrad and grad. The explanation I received from my instructors
(two leading US design schools) about their design decisions / rational left me
completely dissatisfied as a young design

Alan,
There's a lot of research going on. Barbara Ballard, who I think is on this
thread, can probably offer more information, but here's a link to get started

Exactly. Is ego fulfillment worth the $20-40k? If I were single, maybe.
If a
lateral move would result in a significant pay raise, maybe. But the
truth
is that an IxD with enough experience, these days, is so in demand that
this
huge pile of cash may not be a wise investment.
