You can get the XP Home Upgrade edition for around $100, the upgrade
from 98 should be as straightforward as sticking the disc in and

I was assuming the Treo was coming in from the outside world via GPRS or
something, in which case all you'll have is an IP. However, of course,
if you're on a local network via wireless there surely will be a MAC.

What everyone's forgetting is where your packets go after they leave
your house - out into the big bad internet. If SSL is good enough to
protect them out there (and by and large it is) then it's good enough
to protect them in transit from your notebook to your router.

Actually, these days, most media players (on Windows anyway) do stream
the PCM - at least as an option. I know I don't have any of the CD
audio cables hooked up in my machine and it works just fine.

A couple of things come to mind. Firstly, the network protocols are
different (SMB vs HTTP) - it's possible one works better in your
particular circumstances. Secondly, depending on your settings it's
possible SlimServer is transcoding your mp3s back down to a lower
bitrate.
There's also WinSlim (http://www.adamreeve.com/software/) which will
give you basic transport controls in a small native windows app.

I would think it's much more likely to be your IO bogging down than CPU,
but task manager will tell you for sure. Last time I checked I could
play while scanning on my server and it's just a lowly Athlon.
