I would check the Date & Time control panel to see if you're set to use a
Network Time Server. If so, disabled that. If you don't use Folder Actions,

When I used to use a Thinking Mouse from Kensington, after I slept and woke
up the PowerBook, I lost a lot of speed and the mouse didn't behave 100%. I
dabbled a bit with it after 8.6 and those symptoms no longer occurred.

Under the MacOS, PCMCIA is more of a bottleneck than 10Mbit ethernet, so

The RoadRocket and any other video-oriented card will ONLY work in the
bottom slot as ONLY the bottom slot supports something called ZoomedVideo

I've found any cellular data connections work best over the GSM Standard,
provided by VoiceStream or PacBell.

This has been explained as the classic result of that situation, whether you
HAVE MCE Upgrade OR NOT.
To get the IXRoadRocket to work, a DIFFERENT CardBus (NOT PCMCIA) card must
be inserted, and then ejected, and THEN the RoadRocket can be inserted
without a crash.

With my original 2400/180, it did, and since I have replaced my logic board,
it continues to, and I DO NOT have the MCE Cardbus Upgrade, but please do
not take that as absolute evidence. I have heard in the past, that the date
of production is relevant.

Also, I'd try trusty Disk Warrior, maybe a Drive Setup "Update Driver",
resetting the PRAM, and last but not least, the backup, re-initialize and
restore.
