If you have Quick Split set to On on the 756PROII, the behavior you
mention is the default. The easiest way to accomplish the behavior you want
is to set Quick Split to Off. Then clicking on spots will set the spit
frequencies correctly and bring the main VFO VFO A into the foreground.
