I'm happy to have been some help as I've learned a lot from this list.
My TX5K score so far is 12 contacts, 7 bands and 3 modes, including RTTY this

Jeremy and all, the external wattmeter reading has to overcome the
diode drop in the wattmeter before it will provide deflection. At low

the diodes to conduct.
The full scale reading of the wattmeter may be correct, but a
Turning the KAT and the K3 simultaneously seems to work too. I have one of

OK but it probably depends on how fast the K3 is booting up.

Jeremy,
What range is your external wattmeter set for? If it is 100 watts or
200 watts, you will probably not get any deflection at 2.4 watts.
When the load is 50+j0 ohms, you can rely on the K2 display.
I suggest removing the external wattmeter and using the display.

Mark,
My understanding from the manual is that the KAT500 must be on when the K3
is turned on for the Aux connection to work properly.
In my shack this is accomplished by connecting the KAT500 directly to the 12
volt buss; that way it is already on when I turn the K3 on. This works well
for me.
If you utilize the utility program you can make it do aboutanything you want it
to do.
