There is another caveat to keep in mind when using the K3 in
transverter mode. Sensitivity will be subject to the ham band
BPFs, so a preamp may be needed if the IF freq. falls well
outside the BPF passband unless a general coverage module (KBPF3)
is installed. The KBPF3 works fine if the
There are plenty of LF converters to homebrew from, most very
simple including those using an SA602/612. Another is the AMRAD
LF converter, QST April 2002. PCBs can be purchased from FAR
circuits. I use three of those for dual RX and TX with a 14MHz
local oscillator and a K3 in transverter
Another very reasonable switch for the kit builder:

I trunk three of those from an old Sixpack for up to 18 antennas
(still have 4 unused slots!) and they've worked flawlessly.

The ZN-SLR is certainly amongst the best single lever keys ever made. I
don't know to what extreme you like your spacing, but I typically have
mine set to the point where the contact is closed and then backed off
ever so slightly; I also set magnetic tension rather light. Most single

Strong points for the K3, lighter weight, easy to ship, repairs are not
expensive, and can be done in the field on occasion. Great
performance...also a great rig for portable operation. The only
negative is the user interface which is not really that great
The audio level differences remind me of a situation I had w/ a DSP
board, but had nothing to do w/ the Rev D upgrade.
Your original DSP board may have been defective. I had to replace one
of my K3's DSP board a while back as I was noticing a significant audio
level difference between the two
Still have:
LP-Pan (Kit build) + EMU0202 - reduced $215 shipped (lower 48) (actual

(2) Elecraft AF1 Active audio filters w/ audio amplifier - $45 shipped
each, $80 shipped for the pair OBO (they run $60 + shipping new). Used

I don't see what purpose an audio filter board would serve, given that we
have a crystal filter followed by DSP filtering and then RX equalization

low level already.

G'day Lyle,
Interesting news. I will discover if this is so in the next couple
of weeks, the new DSP board is in the post.

In a space limited situation, a parallel dipole (or inverted-V) does
well. Just calculate your 1/2 wave lengths for each band connect them
to a common feedpoint. Use small diameter PVC for spreaders. Even on a
small lot, you could get away with an 80-10 parallel (fan) inverted-V.

Seeing as one (LP-PAN) just sold this afternoon, I'll re-post. Perhaps

Take a look at what's happening before the ADC and after the DAC circuits.
The K3 has some of the best designed audio circuits for a communications

There are numerous good amplifier choices out there. I wonder if some think
that with the Elecraft name on their amplifier it will make the same

The only thing I've found less than optimum is the b-set press to gain
access to sub-rx settings. It would be far more convenient to be able
to manipulate sub-rx filter settings, antenna selection, band changes
