I have 2 questions about EMC2, I hope that somebody can point me into
some useful direction.
1) Is there a way to update from 2.4.0 to 2.4.1 on Lucid?
2) I have been trying to compile EMC2 on Lucid without any success.

The configure script is generated by the autogen script. Run autogen,
then configure, as shown on the wiki:

My milling machine has 4 M10 holes on the face of the spindle. (It is
a 30 INT). it appears that these are part of the specification for
30INT. Has does anyone know what they are for?

These bolt holes are used for mounting large face
mills. They use a centering plug in the taper but
do not rely on a drawbar to hold them into the
spindle. The plug is not a permanent part of the
face mill, but rather an accessory used with an
other face mills.

And you must 'sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev' to fix gtk problem you

I managed to complete all these commands.
$ ./autogen.sh
$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make setuid
I also ran these commands:
$ . /home/waterjet/emc2-dev/scripts/emc-environment
$ emc

I'm not sure this is documented anywhere; please feel free to improve
the wiki by mentioning it.
As far as I recall, this capability is new in emc2.4.

Eventually the buildbot will make lucid packages...
For now, here's how to create a debian package from your git checkout:
cd to your git checkout (probably $HOME/emc2-dev)
cd debian
./configure -a
cd ..
fakeroot debian/rules binary
dpkg -i ../*.deb
