I made another try at running emc over ssh -Y again this morning, but it
fails shortly after opening an incomplete axis screen, as follows:

I believe that axis cannot run over ssh -Y due to needing access to the
host's video hardware (OpenGL). I would love to be proven wrong.

yes you are wrong :)
I have never seen a issue where a X application couldn't be run over X.
I have done it with Axis to my OSX machine multiple times without issues.
The OpenGL calls simple get translated over X, this is by design and the beauty
of X.

Before 2.4.6 came out with the Ubuntu 10.4 build I was unable to put the old CD

I opened up the controller box and the StepperWorld FET4 board does indeed use
the Allegro UCN5804B.
Armed with the spec sheet you provided, I can now tweak the stepconf settings

1) my EMC2 box running Ubuntu 10.04LTS and FireFox 3.6.18
2) my iPhone running iOS 4.2.9 and whatever the version of the included
Safari
I find bottom posting a PIA as you have to wander through all the stuff
you have already read to find nothing sometimes.
I also have no trouble viewing the linuxcnc.org site on all 8 computers
of all kinds and sizes and shapes.
