I'm on a RH 7.3 box where I don't have root privileges. I want to
build Evolution from source and put it in my $HOME/bin, $HOME/lib etc.
Is this doable? Practical?

Correct, I guess this is unfortunately only useful when having one
computer to check your mail. Sometimes it is nicer to keep the mails
on the server. Going back to Evolution 1.0.8 might be not a bad idea

non-Evo clients, like Horde's Imp. And they don't know anything about

your Inbox and you also wipe out the Trash, so be careful).
