You need to set up encrypted passwords properly.
It's not as simple a matter as simply setting "encrypted passwords = yes".
You still have more to do!
You must populate the smbpasswd user/passwd database, set the hashing level,
etc.

run the console version "setup". Which gets me

I had the same problem... I was clearly due to a bad ISO image when I FTPed the ISO
image. You can check this by finding the MD5sum. Its unlikely this is your
problem but the symptoms were the same where some packages didnt want to install.

The problem can be as simple as mismatched pairs. 32MB of FP and 32MB of
EDO may equal 64RAM in Windows but Linux will only recognize 32.

There should be two iso image files. One should be the typical size of
650Mb. The other is 351Mb. The names are mandrake71-inst.iso and
mandrake71-ext.iso respectively.

Now again xman can't handle bz2 compressed man pages in Mandrake 7.1. This was
a problem in earlier Mandrake releases i remember, but was corrected later. Now
this problem is back.
Otherwise, I can tell that I successfully installed Mandrake 7.1 on a dual PII
system with SB Live!. Really nic
