It turned out that I needed to modify /etc/devfs/conf.d/modem.conf to
reflect the use of ttySLT0 instead of ttyS0.

Hi .
I have a problem with a IDE Tape Backup . I think
is detected ok but when trying to work with it it gives me error when testing or
trying to extract (testing tar -tvf /dev/ht0 , extracting tar -xvf /dev/ht0 ) I
back up with tar -cvf /dev/ht0 /home with no errors.
This is what dmesg r

This can happen when you have a symlink that points back [in]to the parent
directory. So you end up copying that directory/file recursively over and

Hello All,
At long last I have made a move to buy a CD R/W drive. A local store sells a
Cyber Drive that is affordable. It is an IDE device and according to the box,
and Cyber Drive's web site, it Linux compatible.
I was wondering if anyone knows of any issues that I should be aware of?

Hi!
Periodically my X server (from ML8.2, on NVidia Geforce MX400 graphic

/var/log/messages. Any remedies known? Should I blame the kernel
or the X server, or myself? Earlier today I reported a problem with the

I have an IBM 300PL (PII 300Mhz - 128Mb ram). It has onboard Crystal CS4235 chipset. During install I get the message to configure sound after install is complete. When I run sndconfig it detects a 'ISAPNP Model : Crystal Audio:Disabled'. (It is enabled in the BIOS) sndconfig can play the Linus so

Greetings,
With msec set to level 3 and above, RPM_CHECK is turned on. This caused
"rpm -V" to run, which isn't a bad thing.
However, the kernel-sources package contains several hundred generated
files. ALL of these files show up as changes on my system since I have
compiled my own kernel.

Hi Phil,
I tried a cheap Cyberdrive CD-RW (CW038D) with a Mandrake 8.1
box and had absolutely no joy whatsoever. It may not have been
Linux that was the problem but I'm not convinced. Couldn't get
a test CD to mount at all never mind doing any burning. Tried
tweaking the BIOS and disabling DMA bu
You guys are GREAT! - Problem Solved.
Well, the problem was that /mnt/tripod never got mounted and I did fill up
/mnt/tripod with the recursive copy until it ran out of space. What was
causing me problems was that I though I had created one large tmp file
somewhere. All of my searches usi

As already recommended: use gramofile!
It's excelent. I've used it to 'transform' several k7 audio to CD!
But I got a recipe:
- I record and process the sound with gramofile; (initial input and final)
- I use aumix to control the input/output levels;
- I tran

Hi All,
Not really a newbie to Linux but to Mandrake ;-)
I've download 'Drak 8.0-PowerPC Edition... It installs like a charm ;-)
Now let's talk about some problem... all macs have an integrated Ethernet
port, but having much more than one mac around me, some also have additional
cards...

On the older promise cards, you had to pass some parameters to the kernel at
boot time. If you download the FastTrak66 Red Hat Linux Driver from thier
site, and untar it, you will find some readme files that explain what these
parameters are. I don't know if it will work for you, but it's worth a
There really aren't THAT many. Just preview the screensavers, one at a time,
from the xscreensaver-demo gui. Turn on the ones you like, turn off the ones
you don't (or that don't work).

True. There are a lot of 'em, but the number is manageable. Call me lazy

Dr John,

I have not heard anyone explain this as well as Cliff Clavin on Cheers. One
afternoon at Cheers, Cliff was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm.
Here's how it went: "Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo
