called Xdenu that is a very minimal distro which provides the Linux
kernel and an Xserver along with the simplest window manager and
almost no applications.
What is even better is that the whole distro fits onto, and can be
that as a minimal install and the
Xserver it uses. That seems to fit on a few disks? Maybe that could
be a good begining point.

someware, I downloaded the Quake3 Demo
and upon install, it did not detect any 3d accelerator drivers and crashed
