Your presumption is correct. I have had Nikonscan (various versions) and
Vuescan (lots of versions) living happily together under Win 95
Make sure you have your scanner on BEFORE you start vuescan, it does a scsi bus scan
on startup.

My 7.1.3 has a seperate control for Image Brightness and Gamma. Image brightness will
affect the blacks of the image, Gamma not so much.
I often leave Black to .01 or so which results in the black edge of negs or slide
masks going close to 0, I almost always go with Maximum and do any cropping

I get around all of these problems by not using these features in VueScan:
- I never have used the crop box. Probably a carryover from when the Mac
version did not have it.
- Tried to use folders once. Now I just leave the images in VueScan's

Nikonscan; I have found it to do what it should do, quickly and with great
control. I bought Vuescan after reading how much better it was, but have
not found it to be either better or worse, just different and much more

I've used Vuescan to scan line-art on the Epson 1200U Photo, and to scan
film and negatives at it's full 1200 dpi and have never had a problem.

Have you set the Crop and Buffer such that you are sure VueScan is
looking at actual picture content (and not frame edges or sprocket
holes) for setting the white and black points? If it sees a sprocket
hole or an opaque frame edge that really messes things up! The picture
will be quite flat (low
I meant to mean the sand is supposed to be more yellow than gray. I had to drop the
gamma down below one to get some shadow in the 60 to 80 range of the water on the
sand. It doesn't quite help enough for the skin of my son in the sun, which is coming
into 220 for the red component, which is
