I had this problem too.
I fixed it by running "fink configure" and updating the mirrors.

I'd agree that the uses are limited. But I have used fink's Firefox
because I needed to check something remotely and I could throw an X-
Window onto my remote machine.

Apparently, there is a dependency on "fontconfig2-shlibs", but this
was not installed.
