Bad form to answer my own query, but before doing "fink install xforms"
for xforms-1.0-3, you need to remove /sw/include/X11/forms.h if there
is a previous version of xforms installed. The maintainer might want
to incorporate this into the distribution.

I have used xforms-1.0-1 (which was xforms-0..0) from fink. When I
try to upgrade to xforms-1.0-3, the compilation fails in the image
subdirectory, which later causes the compilation of fd2ps to fail
because the flimage library is not built. This is on MacOS 10.2.3.

This suggestion, which was also made by Derek Homeier, seems to get the

How do I work
System-tetex (used with the teTeX from Weirda's TexSoft page) seems to
be screwed up in the default fink configuration. Xdvi, in particular,
cannot find VF font files, and reports numerous errors. Debug with
xdvi reports that it is lookiing in /var/tmp/texfonts for the file
information, and
I installed xdvi from fink, and the TeX.dmg package from the TexShop
site. I installed the placeholder for this teTeX package from fink,
and modified the configuration file as suggested in the xdvi notes.
But I still cannot get mktexpk to work correctly when building fonts
