I had over time hopelessly tweaked my fink into trouble and so
removed ~/sw/ and fink commander for a redo. All is well except I
can't find Lyx. Any ideas? Is it gone or is my local install of Fink
Commander not seeing it?

you are right about the big operators problem; it is a qt issue.
also, it turns out the math background color issue is a bug introduced in

weirdly i can change all display preferences except those associated with
math display, i.e. the background color. i can change it in preferences,
but the display is unaltered. the .lyx/pref
