Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if I can get a little training advice on how to deal with a
horse that kicks- not me- but horses.
I was out trail riding this afternoon with my neighbors- and my usually
sweet little Fjord mare- this was her

Actually we took Red to school for a project with the school kids. Our
group was studying zebras. I found that black Halloween face/body paint
worked the best. The paint comes on a thick popscicle stick that you dip
into water to moisten.

We did some trailer shopping/snooping tonight and now
I have a question as to how wide the trailer has to be
for two Fjord hineys to fit. The two I am purchasing
aren't real big, but that doesn't mean we don't have a
drafty size Fjord at some

Hi Jayne - I am sure there are a lot of people on the list with more
towing experience than I have, but for the past 9 1/2 years I have towed
with a 6cyl Ford Explorer. It is rated to tow 5,000 lb too. The trailer
weighs 2,000lb, an aluminium Kingston, and

All our fjords get free choice round bales all winter long, unless they come
inside and get fed from sq. bales. Only in the coldest and windy weather.
Fjords love it outdoors, but of course they have shelters. Our hay is natural
prairie hay, not

Jayne,
You might not have as much of a problem going as stopping. I'd check the
weight of your trailer (our featherlite weighs 3300lbs), verify the weight of
the horses(and think about how much they'll weigh when full grown), and then
check the Dodge

I feed my fjords three times a day - 7 am, 1 pm, 7pm . little
Hasse has hay most of the day - All get grain twice a day. Big boy Sven
gets barely a cup of grain but he is a happy camper. I switched to all grass
hay - no alfalfa - for Sven -

Hello fjord listers,
well, I have been much too busy with work for my own liking lately, so
haven't written much. As Brigid says, we are very excited to move to a new
boarding place, with direct trail access, hilly grassy pasture with creek,

Everyone has an opinion, here's mine. I've been hauling horses or heavy
equipment with pickups for around twenty years.
Your none horse friends are correct, your Dakota will only tow a normal horse
trailer if the weight in the truck is kept to a minimum

I certainly agree...I don't like obese fjords. I keep mine pretty happy
feeding them several small meals a day, about 6 times when I am at home. A
major hay feeding at 6:00 am, a mid morning hay snack, A noon feeding
(fairly large in the

the neglegent fjord owner who let their fjord drink too much and pass out in
the water tub and drown..very disturbing!

Jayne,
You need to check the weight of your horse trailer also. The tow rating is for
trailer AND cargo.

re: free choice round bales... the trick to prevent obesity
is to select lower quality hay, so they can eat as much as
they want. High fiber (NDF 55) restricts intake by
filling them up...kinda like high fiber unsugared
cereal...only so much

Hello Jayne,
Sometimes with a smaller pickup, it is not the ability to pull the
trailer that is the problem, but the problem is when you try to stop, and the
smaller pickup just gets pushed right on through the stop signs, by all that
weight behind.

Hey Lisa! It's good to have you back, we've missed you. (And those silly
things you say!! LOL) I do believe the DOA in the stock tank in CO was a BAT
and not a poor Fjord.

I have found several ways to use round /or large bales and keep my fjords
looking great.
First of all my younger horses are allowed all they want of high quality hay
so good round bales pose no problem. A few older horses can even join this

Hello,
Our truck is a 2000 Dodge Dakota 4WD with V8 engine.
It has a tow package rated to 5,000 lbs and electric
brake hook up. We intend to buy a two horse trailer
in the next couple of weeks and go to pick up our new
Fjords. They average

Lisa, I think that was a dead BAT! found in the water tank, trying to get a
drink. I remember in our discussion of bats...don't rush to put that story
in the local farm paper...
Geez, how some people jump to conclusions! LOL
