Well, the problem with moving away from FireWire is that no other current
connection has the band width (OK< ThunderBolt does, but it is off to a slow
start).

Well, 1024x768 seems to be the minimum, so say 2048x768 should do it. I do not
think it will allow more than one instance, however. …JMM

I have to agree with Lester - an FT-857D is the easiest package.
Taking a computer, radio, amp, tuner, etc will be a major PITA.
A ruggedized laptop (I use a Panasonic ToughBook CF-30 MK.2) and a Flex 3000
would be the best Flex setup, but that needs 13.8V for the Flex and 120V or a

I have found fatigue to not be an issue. Most of the time once it is set, you
just tweak the AF, filters etc. I have found that the combination of a touch
screen and Flexcontrol allows me to run the Flex computer without a keyboard or
mouse. I have a 17" monitor and wish it was smaller, though,
Affordable is the key. I use an Elo touch and it is great, I got it for $20 at
a hamfest (the seller clearly did not know what it was). Look around, they are
out there used.

I have used hardware versions of this (the link appears to be software, it is

Hey All,
Anyone own an Elecraft K3 and a Flex 3K or 5K? I am curious to know how they
stack up against each other in a QTH environment (versus in a lab). Thanks!

Interesting idea, but you know, the Yaesu rugs that cost $10,000 and up are
selling. If the performance can blow that radio out of the water, then the $7K
price is actually a bargain.

Well said and I agree.
How many times has a major manufacturer introduced a new whiz-bang radio with a
software bug in it. How many times has that bug not be fixed? This one of the
reasons I have a Flex to begin with.
If I am spending that much on a radio, and little extra is not an issue.

Nope. This is normal in many industries. Basically it does two things:
1) You get a shot at the first batch
2) It give the company more money to actually build the things to sell.

I know what I want: more knobs and buttons. I already run my Flex 3K without a

Hi Jack,
This is normal behavior on any SSB radio - you'll never see the peak power on
voice as you do on CW due to the way voices works. If you screamed into it or
whistled into it, you'd see higher peaks, but normal tone of voice, yours is
right on the money.
The TNF is just brilliant. Good job to all those at Flex HQ.

Using MultiRX, can I monitor two different frequencies on two different bands

I hope so. I love my Flex very much, and it is nice to get a "new" radio
whenever the software is updated, but I'd really like Flex to make a machine
aimed for the mainstream - the 5000c is almost that machine.
Then again, maybe they do not really want to compete with the "big 3". Hmmm...

OK, I researched this, but could not find a definitive answer. Can you run more
than one FlexControl at the same time? I love the FC, but could really use one
more knob to run the system without a keyboard or mouse. Thanks.

FWIW, only the new ThunderBolt MacBook Pros have to run Windows 7, the earlier

A 400-800 cable or even an adapter will do the trick. Screen resolution should

Well, I'll be danged.
That may have even been the one I saw. Why have they not moved it to the
mainstream? I can see a version of this competing for shelf space with Yaesu,
Icom, etc... Make it with a locked OS/hidden OS so it can be sold "off the
shelf".

I saw someplace an SDR that was built into a rack mount PC as an all-in-one
solution - just add monitor and KB/mouse. Has Flex considered this? A locked
operation system (LINUX?) would prevent issues, and they could control the
hardware and OS. Seems like a "next step" so dealers can sell them "
