Okay, based on feedback I have copied Arialbd.ttf to
/opt/freevo/skins/fonts/Arial_Bold.ttf. This works. It still doesnt explain why the
binary runtime works though.
Maybe future Gentoo builds need to set up a symlink as suggested eksewhere.

Yes,
Freevo only looks (until now) in skins/fonts... Dischi said something
about including the X font path in freevo, but I don't know if it was
already done.
timesbd and impact are only used in my test skin named 'barbieri',
don't use that, it's a test-only skin.

I have the microsoft wenfonts, I have also asked a friend to look on his windows
system, the closest I can come is arialbd.ttf. I dont know if this is the same font
or not.
I could just use the binary runtime. I can live with that. Unless it is beneficial
to others to look for this font so

I'm not at all familiar with Gentoo... maybe it might be worthwhile to
just install the microsoft corefonts and copy the file
"Arial_Bold.TTF" into your skins/fonts/ directory.

I think the Gentoo build applies this patch SDL_ttf2-2.0.6-patch2
During the build I see this

I'm still wondering if it's the SDL_ttf issue Krister fixed many moons
ago.

Did you apply the SDL_ttf patch from CVS? The crashing over fonts issues
was apparently fixed by that? I never needed it myself, but it should
work.

Hi, I dont have this font. But since its not part of the runtime and the binary
runtime works where the gentoo specific one does not I had discounted this.
I found a font cld arielbd.ttf renamed it and dropped it in. I dont know if this
should work, but it didnt. Other than that, if someone

That shouldn't matter. There is a try except around this and we have a
fallback font for Arial_Bold.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but do you have a file called

Yes, it was a Gentoo problem. It works for me, but Mark had some
problems.

I've been using 1.5.6 since it was released, I also ran CVS snapshots
before that. Whatever problem people are seeing isn't with pygame but
something pygame is probably built on.

Actually I think what I'm seeing on the tv is a garbled form of the errors in my
pervious mail. I did see some stuff coming up on the tv when it was running mostly ok
with pygame 1.5.5 but maybe it was different.
I dont think it relates to the current problem though.

Mark,
At startup you are probably seeing this.
Couldnt load font "skins/fonts/Arial_Bold.TTF"
trying alternate: ./skins/fonts/kimberly_alt.ttf
Arial is hardcoded in your theme.fxd and the newer pre- 4 5 runtimes
doesn't load the alternate font. When i added the Arial_Bold.TTF
in skins/fonts

Great, I'll test it over the weekend and let you know. Thanks for the help.
I'd be happy to test a test candidate, but am also happy to wait for the next release
if it makes your life easier.

I made a new freevo_runtime. Since sdl-ttf 2.0.6 and pygame 1.5.6 are
masked right now, this new runtime is also masked
