Jeff- This seems consistent with a hardware failure in your something
something (I can't remember what it's called, but it provides power to
the screen.) The same thing happened to my ThinkPad from work with
turning down the screen brightness being the same workaround. I would
get it repaired

about for a while. Where can I buy a Firewire 6 Pin to 6 Pin cable right

I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing companies offer screen
protectors like they use on Palm Pilots and Newtons..
I think at least two companies offer the protectors (clothes for
protecting the screens).
