So it seems that enough of us have had success with
ATA6 large capacity drives from various manufacturers.
Seems to me that problems are spurious (the list
member's experience during exhaustive tests
notwithstanding - is testing hardware your job?) and
therefore possibly due to manufactuering
I have a 400 MHz Pismo (576 MB RAM - OS 10.4.3) and
replaced the original 6 GB with a Travelstar 40 GB,
ATA6 back in July of this year. Bought from OWC. No
issues to date, runs quiet and fast. The original
drive was fairly noisy and died the day the new drive
arrived - talk about timing!

I recnetly got a great deal on a 400 MHz Pismo with a
bad battery and as it turns out a bad HD. I've
upgraded to a Hitachi 40 GB HD and added an Airport
Card and couldn't be happier with this Mac, except for
the 8 MB Video limit.
Seems that back in the day of the the Performa Macs I
read that
Perhaps you can hold out until next year when the new
Mac-Intels are out. Then you can boot in XP or Tiger
depending on whether or not your IT buddy is hovering
about ( ;-) ). Or, maybe by then, the whole company
