As the original poster of this question, I may have had a buried memory
about mention of the DVD player's unhappiness with external drives,
which Luis now revives. Does anyone have direct experience with the
Pismo, Panther, LaCie DVD external and Apple's DVD player? Tony
I hope this is a simple question - if I buy an external DVDR/W drive,
will I be able to use it to play commercial DVDs (movies) and music
CDs? I've abandoned hope of the Expansion bay DVD/CD working...) Tony

From time to time people - me included -have asked for help with
non-functioning DVD players in Pismo Powerbooks. I thought mine had
died again (Matsushita replaced LG as recommended). I've just upped the
RAM from 192 to 640. Suddenly CDs mount, DVDs play again. Mind, I had a
scary morning as
No, the Pismo has an internal Airport (but not Airport Extreme) card

The Airport card (old) in my Pismo had been acting up, failing to make
its presence known, 8 times out of 10 restarts. I'm not sure if its a
faulty card or a faulty internal physical connection. So I replaced it
with a Linksys 802.11g PCMCIA card. A bit expensive here in the UK at c

Yes you can run Airport Software Base Station in Panther. Its quite
easy to set up in Panther using the Network preference pane. Easier
than in 9. Tony

Because my Airport card connection seems faulty, I've been on the
lookout for a PC card substitute for my Pismo. Saw a card in a sale at
Maplin's for only £12 and bought it on the off chance that it might be
a badged card that would work in the Mac. It's a Binatone WL1000 and it

Anyone can help? At first intermittently, now more or less permanently,
the Airport card on my Pismo won't show up as being present. I've
swapped it for another card I know is good so it's not the card that's
faulty. It won't show under 9.2.2. or Panther. It's not Panther as such

I'm currently running 9.2.2 on a Pismo and a CRT iMac. I'm thinking of
jumping up to X Panther when it comes out. Should I worry about being an
early adopter (aka mug or guineapig)? And will I be able to use the same
system on both machines? Thanks for your collective wisdom

Re SCSI - I have a Pismo and an Adaptec PowerDomain Slim SCSI 1480 PC card.
This allows me to use my SCSI-equipped Epson 200 slide scanner. I don't know
what other SCSI devices work with it but it might be a solution for you.

There's two things wrong with my brilliant Pismo - the useless DVD/CD drive

Well, it's partly subjective, I admit. It sounds cleaner to my ears. Griffin
say its better because it takes the output away from the general buzz of
electronic impurities inside the case. It may also be that the USB out is
better than the phono? Tony
