After a lot of screwing around, I found various ways to make the netbook not work in X, and even not boot. X won't work if I have CONFIG_STUB_POULSBO enabled. I also found that if I put video=640x480 in the lilo append= line, the machine would come up in 640x480 mode, and stay in 640x480 mode. Similarly for video=800x600. I assume it would also work for 1024x768. I believe the GRUB equivalent to lilo append= is GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=. I've added 2 duplicate entries in my lilo boot menu, with just the video= differing. I don't expect to give presentations with my netbook. But if I have to, I can downsize the video simply by rebooting into the appropriate mode. I have one of the really early netbooks (32-bit-only). I'm just happy that it works. One thing has made the process worthwhile. I found out via Google that setting aside some ram for the video noticably improves video performance. The netbook can now play 1080p HD Youtube videos in the large player. Not fullscreen. Before this, 1080p would stutter badly, even in Youtube's small player. -- Walter Dnes waltd...@waltdnes.org

Other distros invent other names for the X11 drivers (Debian calls it xserver-xorg-video-modesetting and Fedora xorg-x11-drv-modesetting for instance). I did try xf86-video-modesetting, a few minutes ago and it does not support X Windows on my machine. The in-kernel GMA500 driver is being used with xf86-video-modesetting and it has some advantages over xf86-video-fbdev (like xrandr 1.2 so you can configure the resolution of your external monitor). I have seen occasional reports from users that the modesetting driver fails to detect the Poulsbo graphics, but due to lack of hardware I could not investigate further. If the modesetting driver does not work for you, then it would be a good idea to report a bug at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ and include the relevant logs. Pacho+Christopher, I actually have an early 32-bit-only Poulsbo/Atom ASUS netbook working. I think I can speak with a little authority because of that. See message that I posted in Gentoo-Users... http://gentoo.2317880.n4.nabble.com/Intel-GMA500-Poulsbo-works-with-recent-kernels-td158517.html a few notes... 1) The instructions at http://blog.bodhizazen.net/linux/linux-gma500-poulsbo-driver-moved-out-of-staging/ list the make menuconfig steps necessary for the Poulsbo GPU. Since the Intel GMA5/600 KMS Framebuffer option is selected, xf86-video-fbdev *MUST* be used as the video driver. I did try xf86-video-modesetting, a few minutes ago and it does not support X Windows on my machine. I also suggest that those instructions be copied into the mask message, at least the following... * Kernel setup (make menuconfig) Device Drivers - Graphics support - DRM (Direct Rendering Manager) - Intel GMA5/600 KMS Framebuffer * X video driver x11-drivers/xf86-video-fbdev 2) CONFIG_STUB_POULSBO is not absolutely necessary, but may be helpful. It is related to specialized stuff like controlling brightness and other low-level video control stuff 3) See also http://blog.bodhizazen.net/linux/ubuntu-12-04-gma500-poulsbo-boot-options/ for more Poulsbo-specific tweaking. -- Walter Dnes waltd...@waltdnes.org
