just out of curiosity. Why don't you use the binary drivers? I just setup my
laptop under gentoo and as before I use the binary drivers, cause so I get
all from the gf2go card that is possible. Does the "official" Xfree driver
also provide twin view and so on?

Well I usually installed linux in a single partition with a swap partition in
another hard drive for better performance. I never till lately have used extra
partitions for /boot or /usr. However the second hard drive was needed to make a
second pc boot so I ended up with no swap on a pc with 2

Nope. It turned out to be an unknown kernel problem. When I switched from
the gentoo kernel to a vanilla one, everything worked. No time to find out

I have discovered that I need to run perl 5.6.1 in stead of 5.8.0 (there
are subtle changes to the way hashes are handled that I cann't work
around right now) so I installed the earlier version of perl with the

I have been attempting to untar the stage1 tbz2 file today. Unfortunately,
since the LiveCD won't detect my Adaptec RAID card on a PIII (althought it
does fine on an AMD Athlon - go figure!) I have had to boot with a RH 7.3
recovery disk to the RH 7.3 SGI XFS rescue mode.

you from being able to extract the tarballs..
-j specifies to bunzip the file. You can run bunzip2 seperatly before running

of the system) via packages on an old cyrix 233 system (as I couldnt
build them on the athlon) - no change :( Once underclocked, I rebuilt

whereas they were fine before. This included gentoo sources, lolo,

The reason is that you were using a double quoted string.
Variables and Escape chars are interpolated into double quoted strings.
Not so, with single quoted strings
