I have some extra steps in there on purpose and indeed there are some unnecessary folders but it works and the same installation will run either an hl2dm or an hl1mp server. Still, if the hldsupdatetool would check / update just the executables and minimal changes for HL1MP (none of the materials

Problem solved. I deleted the GCFs from my steam directory and restarted Steam. Steam re-downloaded the GCFs. I extracted their content, and my server is back online. a) The GCFs were not current, and deleting/downloading them fixed it. b) I did something stupid the first time around and the GCFs
