If anyone is using VNC to admin thier windows box you'll find that altering the
timer has a bad effect on CPU usage. The higher the timer resolution, the
higher CPU usage to the extent that it can gobble 20% of a 3.0Ghz P4.So option

Maybe I should try your extra steps, it might get rid of the many missing
this-or-that resource messages I see in the console. I figured since HL1MP
was beta anyhow, that these were messages we could ignore.

I have some extra steps in there on purpose and indeed there are some
unnecessary folders but it works and the same installation will run either
an hl2dm or an hl1mp server.
Still, if the hldsupdatetool would check / update just the executables and

I don't copy anything from base source engine 2.gcf or half-life source

done is simply:
1) Install hl2mp using hldsupdatetool (hl2 and hl2mp files, etc.)

You can't though, that is the point.
13:40:25 fps_max
13:40:25 "fps_max" = "600" ( def. "300" )
- Frame rate limiter
13:40:29 stats

At this point you could then use fps_max to further tweak the threshold.

I didn't bother. I just deleted and restarted Steam, I figured that

Running a verify on the gcf's did nothing?

I don't want more than that, and you sort of answer your own question any
way. :)
1. I don't want to only have the options of 128 / 256 / 512 as my only
options. I might want a bit more than 256 but not as much as 512, a 100%
increase over

Problem solved. I deleted the GCFs from my steam directory and restarted
Steam. Steam re-downloaded the GCFs. I extracted their content, and my
server is back online.
a) The GCFs were not current, and deleting/downloading them fixed it.
b) I did something stupid the first time around and the GCFs
That is what I thought. And I'm not disagreeing with you, either. How hard
would it be to allow hldsupdatetool to download hl1mp if the person
downloading it supplied a steam account id/password that owned Half-Life
Source Deathmatch?

Because is would mean giving away Half-Life 1: Source for free,
something we aren't interested in doing at this time for the reason of
allowing hldsupdatetool to work with it.

I can't believe there is any technical reason why it can't be made available
via hldsupdatetool. If I and others can assemble a fileset that works, so
can hldsupdatetool. I can, however, believe that internal politics or
policies at Valve will prevent it.
But then, I don't really know exactly how
The trick is to put tv_relay into server.cfg as it does not work from

You need to do whatever magic you did the first time to get the updated
hl1mp content we released this last week, that is why you are out of
date. Certain design choices with HL1MP preclude it from ever working
with the hldsupdatetool unfortunately :(

Changing Windows high resolution timer precision to 2ms, 4ms and 8ms
gives you 512, 256 and 128 FPS respectively. Do you really need more
than that? The only drawback is that this setting is system-wide...

Alfred, I would be very surprised indeed if Valve was not aware that several
of use are running hl1mp source *dedicated* servers, and not from the
in-game UI (you did know this, didn't you). It's not that difficult -
first you use hldsupdatetool to install hl2mp. Anyone can do this, you don't
It's more reliable to delete everything and start over, rather then to
update an existing install.
