Thanks Alfred,
as long as it is a server discussion it's ok, but people should stop
off-topic HL2 client messages, especially in a linux-server list :-)
Hope your answer will be read ...

No, both versions can work in offline mode forever*. The only
functional difference between the two is that people who used a retail
CD key currently need to have their CD/DVD in the CD/DVD drive to play.

The difference between the retail version of the game and the steam
version that makes it necessary for the cd / dvd authentication is
that the retail version is setup to work in offline mode indefinately.
So just to clarify - the CD/DVD version, once unlocked, is able to be
played in offline mode

Hi all,
I'm sorry if this is a duplicate post. I've searched the archives of the
different hlds_ lists via google for the following error message,
focussing on amd, 64 bit, and glibc, as the likely source of the error.
I found some likely candidates, but they all suggest glibc 2.3.2 as the

One possible, probably future, decision. Get VU out of the loop and deal
with this yourself so that you don't have anyone else telling you what you
have to do, and what you can and cannot do. Fire VU and do it your way :).

Could you get away with releasing an update for hl2.exe that removes the
securom protection? That's what happened with Neverwinter Nights, they
decided it was just too buggy so they removed it. Its pointless anyway
seeing as you have to authenticate online.

Type cvarlist to get a full listing of all the cvars. You may also try

There have been reports of people being able to get servers running on
Windows at least... There are bugs regarding player models and you have
to move things around and of course I doubt that there is any kind of
code for actually controlling the game or respawning, but the mechanism

I had some weird error about not bein able to locate some file on the dvd.
so what i did, i made an image of the dvd, and loaded it up in a virtual
