I feel like I'm missing something simple and stupid. I install hlds/linux
via steam, it installs in the normal manner. I change *nothing*. I run:
./hlds_run -game valve
and it works fine. I run:
./hlds_run -game gearbox
and I get:
./hlds_run -game gearbox

The win32 hlds console has a status line at the top. Does the linux version
have anything like this, or is it just a scrolling terminal display without
a status?

There is no quick answer. Valve borked the server list. Busy servers now sit
idle. Valve thinks it's the next best thing to sliced bread. Those who now
have traffic also think it's great. Those that have idle servers that used
to be busy think it sucks. In your case, you are basically screwed.

You select the Change Level tab. Then click the Update button. Then wait a
minute for the map list to be loaded.

Secondly, I'm trying to install the linux hlds server. I run steam:
steam -command update -game valve -dir /fat-e/HellServer
A few of my regulars have requested that I add the entire suite of kitkat
maps, I think there are about a dozen. I have:
kitkat_beach
KitKat_Egyptian
kitkat_jewel
kitkat_kastle
Kitkat_Palace
KitKat_Space
Is this all there are? If not, does anyone know where I can find the rest?

One day the traffic from this list stopped. I went to look at my list subs,
and it told me I wasn't subscribed to the list. Either their server dumped,
or they took me off of the list for reasons unknown .

I've also ran hlds on a PIII/800, and it would run at 5% cpu. With 12
players the machine will scream.

I'm not sure what Valve did, but their change does not seem to favor "low

Speaking of HLSW - has anyone had any issues using HLSW with HLSTATS? I find
that if I query my server with HLSW, the perl stats module stops responding
and no more stats are gathered until I restart it.

Valve still markets Half-Life and CS1.6. They sell it today, therefore they
will not phase it out tomorrow. At the very least, they would have to
compensate all of the people that just bought it, only to find it
discontinued, and I don't think they want to do that. I think that CS1.6
will be around

A bit OT, but really, Valve, that is really really bad business. Assuming
that article is true, you really should have allowed option A. Be nice, kiss
butts, give them an out, and you will likely get more business (and money).
My responce to a nicer approach would be to purchase the necessary licen
Where do you get these from? I picked up a bunch of 2-3 GB drives on eBay

My server sits in my home office, has a monitor that is connected and on
24/7, and I would NEVER run a screen saver on it. If I'm going to bed or
going to be gone, I either turn it off, or just turn the contrast down.
Screen savers are evil! Evil, I tell you! And they also brand you as NEWB.
