The binary that came with hldsupdatetool.bin updated itself to version
34; after that, any call to ./steam fails with "Illegal instruction,"
regardless of passed parameters.

Intel / AMD CPUs, with and without HT, Dual Core and Other functionality,
with every existant linux base. and HZ rate setting. Gary's suggestion does
work however it isn't

I have been running an hlds/srcds server on my FreeBSD box for some time
now, and until recently had no problems.
Now the steam binary has been crashing very often when attempting to update
the game server content.
Here's what the crash looks like:
% ./steam -command update -dir . -ga

c-strike:s and hl2mp servers.
