Do not trust Staples to pack your horn safely. I recently purchased a
horn without a case on EBAY. It was packed by Staples and shipped UPS.
The leadpipe had been bent so that the horn could be wedged into an 18
inch box. The result was a bent bell and a crumpled bell throat. I have
repaired

If you ship an uncased horn, use a sturdy box large enough so that the
horn is not touching the sides. Pack it in packing peanuts so that the
horn floats as if it were in the womb and it will arrive safely. I
have never had a horn that I shipped arrive damaged.
I go a step

We have a guide on our page at http://www.brassarts.com/how_to_ship_a_horn.htm
Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you have any questions about the
page or about the procedure. Any reputable horn shop has a lot of experience
shipping horns. But we usually don't have a lot of experience
A good source of free packing peanuts is freecycle.com in your city.

I once received a horn who's leadpipe was actually sticking
through the side of the box! It had about 3 pieces of
crumpled newspaper in the box, I think for decoration,
certainly not for any functional reason. I've gotten horns
that were just put in the box
The first time I ever heard of shipping the horn
without the case was from Walter Lawson some thirty
years ago. Don't know if he still believes it
doing it that way, or not.

From my understanding and what I've been told, the best way is to ship
the case and horn separate, esp. since its a Conn flat case, and the
bell can get crumpled pretty easily in there. I'm just curious abotu

Having said the above, I think that input on this subject from a repairer or
builder of horns would have more relevance.

I've shipped horns in their cases with no problem. As long as you get a big
enough box to surround everything with a good amount of peanuts, you'll be
fine. If your box was on the bottom of the pile, would you want your horn in a
case?

Make sure that you put lots of padding under/over the valve
cluster. Since this is the most massive part of the horn, it tends to get
damaged if the box suffers a major drop. Other damage can be repaired
rather easily, but a valve assembly, and it's bracing is likely to be a
total
