We were doing: "PIPE CP DEFINE FCTC 9C00 VMTEST" when it could not be defined
in the directory. Now we do: "SPECIAL 0D85 FCTC VMVTAM"

That is quite an amazing concept, checking code in a security audit.
I could not even make a wild guess as to how many lines of code there are on
my z/VM machine, or where it is all at, or in how many different forms,
Assembler, Cobol, REXX,C .. and on and on.
If there ever is such a product perha
But it isn't "them" who are going to run it. "They" are (may be)
requiring that I do it - twice a year. And, from what I have been
piecing together, it is not something that checks ports and the like, it
is something that checks code. That is why I questioned its validity in
this environment.

Then I guess it is time for an RCF suggesting that the RSCS manual be
updated with that statement. Thanks.

Let them run it. The vendor used here had to recode for zVM but they
were willing to do so. They still check a few things (ports being used,
etc.) but they now recognize that the O/S is not unix or linux and they

In the planning manual, there is a note about specifying PARM AUTOLOG on
the IPL statement in the RSCS directory entry that says, "Required if
GCS is autologged." This is a bit ambiguous. GCS is autologged, but
after the system has been up for a bit, if you try to execute the
command CP IPL GCS P
Linux is not even a consideration. We have 2 systems that exclusively
support Linux guests. They are not the targets. It is the system that
supports the TPF test and development environment.

That is a good question. From the way things were presented, it appears
to be a tool that runs on the server. I have enough work on my plate
that I am going to let this rest until someone brings it up again,
hopefully in a forum where I am in attendance.

Richard,
How does the tool work? If it's one of those that probes the site from
outside, just let them run it. If it's supposed to run on the system
with the web server, let them try to run it. Whose fault is it that it
won't execute? Not yours. You could even offer to send your files to a

When you detach a dedicated volume, CP re-reads the label on the suspicion

It is not that I want to test the site, it is that a committee has
specified that the same tool be used for all platforms. This was
chiseled in granite before anyone associated with a mainframe even heard
that it was being considered. Now that the edict has been made, rules is

Colin,
We use virtual FICON CTC's for z/OS guests, but not for TPF. They work fine
for z/OS.

CP will read the label at IPL time, when a device is detached from a
user, and when it is varied online. In between those times, it does not
know of any volume serial other than the last one it recorded.
When your system was IPLed, device 613C was available but CP was unable

OK, there has to be a logical explanation for this (and I should probably
know it):
A DASD's label seems to change after attaching then detaching it:

DASD 613C FREE
==> att 613c *
DASD 613C ATTACHED TO MAINT 613C WITH DEVCTL
==> q 613c
DASD 613C ATTACHED TO MAINT613C

There look to be some interesting talks; how do I find out who's

Richard,
I'm not sure about SPI's product, but if you want to test the site for
potential vulnerabilities and likely attack vectors, you can also try open
source tools like nmap and nikto. Nikto in particular is good at checking

One of our TPF support people has asked me if anyone is using the DEFINE

The reason is that when he does this he get unit checks on the odd number
addresses when IPL'ing the first processor TPF. (However, it goes away
with a later soft IPL).
