I have found the reason for the return code -5.
Although it is supposed to mean 'subcommand syntax error' that is not
my case. The problem is that there is not enough space on the target.

Hi Alan,
I would not call myself a newbie, since I became a VM system
programmer in 1979 with BSEPP. But after a VM/XA install in 1986 I
wandered in the MVS wilderness until I returned to VM support for a
VM/VSE shop in 1999. VSE needed much more TLC than VM to get it

I remember IBM sent out an APAR for VM/SP to fix the problem. I would hope the code has been
included in every VM since then.

HELP VMFTP shows that return code -5 indicates a "subcommand syntax
error".
Most of the time this exact statement works. If you see a syntax
error then please point it out.
The file is being sent to a Microsoft server:

I should have investigated this further before bothering the list.
I looked at the source for VMFTP and it return -5 on subcommand syntax error
I run the VMFTP with the ECHO ALL option and I can not see a syntax
error. And the -5 is always on the PUT command.
