Yeah, I'd like to get 8.6 on my old G3s but can't even with PostFacto4.

You should obtain the Free application mactracker which will show
how much memory your iMac can handle. When I checked on a couple of
the early iMacs' it showed that you can put in a 1Gb memory sim but
the system will only recognize 512Mb

I am trying to get my G3 to recognize two new sticks of 512. They are
out of an identical machine and I have followed all the instructions but to
no avail. Is there a secret to this thing that I have missed? I'm running
10.4 as is the machine they are coming out of. I'm feeling pretty damn
PRAM reset?

What Color/version is your iMac G3? Some of them can handle 512 while others
can only handle 256

Apparently these behemoths are not always capable of recognizing
memory modules of 256Mhz and up, even if they are the right ones.
