I have been talking with the simpleassessment.com people about their
online solutions. Is anyone using them for their student tech assessments?

Last year, I did a little experiment where I plunked a PC with Xubuntu Linux
on it in our high school library, locked down to just OpenOffice, Firefox
and printing. I put a sticker on it with a guest login and password, and
instructions on how to save to and open from a flash drive, and just
Karl,
It sounds like you want a roaming profile. Most schools shy away from
roaming profiles. They take a lot of network resources to push the
desktop/profile over the network every time some logs in. Why save to the
desktop and not just to the students home folder? Maybe I am confused on
what you
I may show my ignorance here, but wouldn't you need roaming profiles to be
working on those Windows clients, and I found support for Windows roaming
profiles to be somewhat broken in OS X Server 10.5, and you're using 10.4.
In our setup, we had to disable support for Windows roaming profiles even
I've been thinking about the same thing the past few days. I put the newest
version of OpenSuse using KDE 4 on a desktop here, it joined the AD domain
easily and everything works really smoothly with no effort on my part. I
really like a lot of the new things in KDE 4 already. I totally
Karl,
The student's document shouldn't be lost. All they need to do is log into
the PC they were actually on. Unless you have a deep freeze like solution
that wipes any changes, Windows have local profile that stays on the
machine. If student A sits at the same PC every day, then the changes and
I have also tested with this, and the biggest problem I have run into is
getting the wireless to work without effort from the user, let alone me
finding drivers that will work and getting them installed. NDISwrapper
works, but not without much hassle. Has anyone else tested with the
wireless part
I have, and wireless is always the weak point if you have windows only
chipsets. NDISwrapper is really the only thing I know of to deal with that.

Yeah, wireless is still the big pain about Linux. I don't bother running
Linux on a laptop unless it's got an Intel wireless card, which is well
supported. I know you can make it work, but lots of hassle.

I have found that even with a 'supported' wireless card, it does not
always (if ever) auto-connect. Until they get the wireless to be less
hassle it is not a viable option for us. I wish it was, but not yet. I
keep checking. I love Linux. :)

Do you guys use the LTSP from linux to do the terminal services at Okoboji? I
was told that you might have been the school that does that with teacher
laptops. Just wondering because we are looking to change a bunch of stuff
around over this summer since I screwed up my domain somehow.
We do not. We use Win 2003 for our thin clients. The clients boot using
a Linux kernel but it takes them straight into the RDP session. No user
interaction with Linux.

someone out there used it and had experience with it.
