How and where do I set McAfee automatic scan and other updates to come on after
closing out of the computer.
Whenever McAfee scans, the computer is a pain to negotiate.

Under the windows update settings via the control panel, there are, I
think, four options.
You apparently know how to get to that, as you've disabled automatic
updates, but change that option to the one that says something like:
"notify me about updates but don't download automatically
I have never had any problems installing updates. They are
good to get to keep up with the latest improvements and
security patches. If you do not want the latest IE, then
unmark this and it won't be included in the updates any
more, in the future.
