In addition to the obvious I will sometimes add side
lines that I happen to come across in my records
search that might aid my research later. Such as
names in a probate, that might confirm that this is a
relation.
I will also more likely to follow families that came

The phrase "name collectors" seems to be used in two ways here:
1. Name-collectors has always seemed to me to be people who just
download and add names from GEDCOMs for people without verifying any
of the data. If you use any of this data in your Legacy file, do be
sure to give it a 0 or 1 rating,

Hehe, I guess my file is extreemely suspect. Yes I do have thousands in my

Everybody in it is not related to me, but a great majority is.

I don't think there's a thing wrong with your thinking, I use the 'found'

Claire,
It just depends on how you follow a line.
For myself the process was/is:
Add self
Add parents
Add siblings
Add spouse
add spouses of siblings
add children (mine)
Add children of Siblings
Add parents of siblings spouses
Add siblings of spouses
Add descendents of spouse's siblings.

Agreed!!! Any undocumented gedcom is just a list of possible connections.
I've received a couple of researched gedcoms and some "what I remember"
lists from other family members, but I still research the people of
interest to me.
Even good reseachers sometimes make mistakes, memory isn't perfect
I'll second George's response. I have a little over 6,000 and they

just be sure to source them, mark their Surety Level at a 0 or 1, and

I am middle of the road. I have about 4000 in my file (my husband's file is

my side of the family is based in rural MS. They migrated there from SC when

Nothing wrong with your thinking. Your choice.
- Some record as much as possible on additional spouses and their
prior/subsequent families.
- Some go farther on children/siblings of cousins, etc.
- Some also use the database to keep track of "unlinked" people, e.g. you
don't know "if" or "whe

I am one of those who have extended my 3d and 4th cousins
lines past any direct connection. I do this because I enjoy
looking up the family histories and so
