Syble, You NEVER usually go from Legacy to Legacy via a Gedcom but with a Legacy File. Legacy 8 opens and converts to the new format all earlier Legacy files perfectly well. You don't have to go anywhere near a Gedcom. Some people use Gedcoms regularly to use other programs to publish on the web

Elizabeth, et al, The .fdb file is your database. The others with the same name but different extensions are used internally for other functions. If you lose them the data can be re-generated, but best to keep them. If you are moving your family file to another folder, keep all of them together.

When you go to run the backup, you first get the "Customise Backup" window. You specify where the backup file is kept and what it will be called at this point. Look for the large button "Select Name and Location for Data Backup" and click on it. If you need more help beyond that, let us know. :
