I'm trying to quickly come up to speed on lilypond and
stumbling quite a bit. I'm putting together a music
book for a group I'm in. In working on the first, very
short song, I'm running into a problem with the
lyrics. The song starts out with a quarter note pickup
(\partial 4). So, the firs

to an hidden melody but when I try that all the rests
end up attached to the bottom line of the pentagram,
which looks like a bug in lilypond itself, can anyone
see if that's the case (a bug) or I'm doing something
wrong ?

I thought that there was a command that could 'detach' a section of
lyrics from the music for a specified time. Does this sound familiar to
anyone? Would this work in this case?

I dont' recall anything in the tutorial about lyrics. Since I am still learning
about the visual world of music can you give an example as to why you would
want to do this? Just curious here and I absorb everything I learn in case I

Problem is that you have both entered the timing for the lyrics and issued an
\addlyrics.
\addlyrics is used to automatically set the timing of the lyrics - and should

Indeed, Phil's query regarding your LilyPond version is the pivotal
question. For two reasons:
First reason
NullVoice has been introduced in Version 2.18 (as far as I know)
Second reason
Current development version 2.19.80 (and before) won't have the problem

voices with
<< { ... } \\ { ... } >>
Now my problem is that lyrics in that part of the music are not shown.
Is there any tweak to solve this issue?

The result is that the lyricsRhythm appears on it's own staff...
By doing
\context Voice ...
you are implicitly instantiating a score for its own while the piano
part is explicitly enclosed within
\score ...

Sometimes the alignment of lyrics and notes can be very tricky for _any_ music
software.
Lilypond does a good job in solving the problem below. I'd like to hear comments
from users. For I know that there are different solutions.
