I got another bug report (thanks Betsie). There was (is) a bug in the
function mk_symbolic_links(). The fixed script is on
http://mikemacisaac.com/mksles9root
Here are the diffs (just one character on each of two lines):

1.2 GB. The install appears to work. It just falls down when I go to IPL
the installed system. I am going to manually mount the disks under the
rescue system and see what I have. That will give me a better idea. Could
be that the mkinitrd didn't work during install, or a number of other
things.
I re-ran the install using FTP as the source rather than NFS (both went to
my Intel linux box) and that appears to have solved the problem. The newly
installed system booted. I am going to try to re-create the problem and see
what the issue really is.

Thanks to those that replied. Sadly, I have to open an incident with
novel/SuSE. Something on the portal with our account is severely frelled
because in one area I can see that we're good to go through July 2006, and
on another part, it says we have no products registered. So, not possible
for me

Yep. Did all that prior to even looking for SP1/2. Which prompted my
message of vexation earlier. I've opened a problem with SuSE/Novell. As I
recall I had to do something like this LAST year when we got the
service/support contract in the first place. The stupidity lies in the
contract is for 4

Thanks a lot for that blindingly fast turnaround!
Problems remain; I've attached an enhanced version of my tester that
will show them up. On Linux 2.4 my tester's fullscreen read() returns
a count of 15, and I suspect it should in Linux 2.6 as well.
