That's pretty open question. I guess the main pro and con of TSM for
z/OS is that it runs on z/OS...
What do you compare with? You could compare with TSM on

For your first problem. Like the others already mentioned you can use the
dasd_configure command.
You can also add an "options dasd_mod dasd=" line to the
/etc/modprobe.conf.local with all the dasd devices you want to get online
after IPL. After that you run mkinitrd en zipl.
for example:
SLES also have the hz_timer file.
It is zero here as well, SLES10 SP2, z10.
and the HZ contains 100.

Disclaimer. I do not use TSM on z/OS.
However, in most of the discussions with compatriots I have had, the
licensing cost for the z/OS version is a de-motivator and most have
licensed TSM for AIX or Linux, and only use a client on z/OS.

Hi Bernie,
how do you run it ? I start vncserver, connect there via vncviewer from my
desktop and run yast2 from xterm. I get no error at all.
Are you using full blown desktop ? I see some gnome in your output...

On my desktop, I use Xming to start the Xserver.
On my guest, I export DISPLAY to my desktop.
I then issue "yast2"

I am looking for gcc 4.2 onwards on sles9 x86_64. Can I get a prebuilt gcc
or do i have to build it myself? if building is the way to go, what should
be the configuration options?
I would like GCC to have 64 bit libs - having 32 bit libs is useful, but not
necessary.

Don't you need the X Window System group ?
Initially, I installed the 4 groups ( your 3 + the X Window group ) and I seem
to run into some sort of problem ( I don't remember what the errors were ) and
then I went on and installed the Gnome Desktop group and the Print Server group.

But your 3 groups do not provide nice/cute little icons when you go into yast2.
If I wanted icons, I think the X window group is needed.
I think the flexibility to use icons (yast2) or ncurses (yast) should be
available.

Thanks for your reply. So you mean to say that i can get source rpm for
later SLES, say SLES 11 and then configure, make bootstrap it using the spec
file in the src rpm.
Also can two versions of gcc exist on one system, if yes then how do i setup
include, link and lib paths?

I do have xorg-x11-xauth installed and I do have x forwarding turned on in my
/etc/ssh/sshd_config.
So what do I have to do to bring up yast2 without exporting my display ?

Just make sure your SSH client has X forwarding turned

So when you set X forward in Putty (which sets your DISPLAY variable) instead
of setting DISPLAY yourself, you don't get those error messages ? No other
change ?
I use only X forwarding as I access SLES11 behind firewall, so I cannot try the
manual setting (I always get cannot open display).

can still choose to add new dasd manually with dasd_configure, makinitrd
& zipl, or automatically with yast. So far, I've found over the years,
