Sue, For your first problem. Like the others already mentioned you can use the dasd_configure command. You can also add an "options dasd_mod dasd=" line to the /etc/modprobe.conf.local with all the dasd devices you want to get online after IPL. After that you run mkinitrd en zipl. for example:

Hi Mark, Thanks for your reply. So you mean to say that i can get source rpm for later SLES, say SLES 11 and then configure, make bootstrap it using the spec file in the src rpm. Also can two versions of gcc exist on one system, if yes then how do i setup include, link and lib paths? Regards, R

So when you set X forward in Putty (which sets your DISPLAY variable) instead of setting DISPLAY yourself, you don't get those error messages ? No other change ? I use only X forwarding as I access SLES11 behind firewall, so I cannot try the manual setting (I always get cannot open display). ==
