Thank you Victor, this is what I was looking for.
Now I have some more substantial strings to search for and I find Phillipp
Kern's blog entry on the same topic:

Viktor, Hendrik,
Thanks for the replies.
I go to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/S390X/InstallationGuide and see some info
on preseeding, but not much on s390x type networking values. What are the
netcfg variables for these questions?

Hi,
I've been trying 'preseeding' with no luck. To specify network values, you
cannot expect to get them on the network, right? So you can't add one line
to the parm file like "auto url=http:///config/ubuntu01.cfg"
to point to a file on the network.
Also I believe there's a limit of like 12 lines
Thanks to all who replied - the info is helpful.

Hello linux-390 list,
I'm working on an Ubuntu on z paper, and have an observation and a couple
of questions.
The observation: The other day I was trying to get my new Raspberry Pi 3
going (in case I don't get enough of computers at work I can now play with
them at home :)). I've
hi,
do you _really_ need Ubuntu? If you just need a Debian based OS, then
perhaps you could use just that, the pure Debian s390x port.

We have an upcoming project that may need Ubuntu running on z/VM. I have
never heard of Ubuntu being supported on z before, so did some googling. It
looks like there was talk of it back in 2011, but I can't find anything later
than that.

Yeah, you CAN do it (and there are people who try it often), but there are
always a few glitches with the upgrade-in-place tools for RHEL and SLES. I've
got Debian machines that have gone through repeated major release updates with
100% reliability. You can't beat:

Excellent! I have been running Ubuntu (desktop, server, netbook) on all
my
computing devices for the last 3 years.. things 'just work'. And Debian
