Using Cable modems for high speed packet

1999-02-15 Thread cmcdonld
Has any one looked in to using cable modems for high speed packet. They use rf over a coax so we should be able to hook them up to a downconverter to a uhf or microwave band with little mods. They would make a good back bone between repeaters for a high speed packet internet.

KISS with CRC - spec anyone?

1999-02-15 Thread Michael J. Tubby B.Sc. G8TIC
All, Does anyone have the protocol spec. for Kiss mode with CRC as I beleive Flexnet uses? It would appear that the Linux kernel driver "mkiss.o" has the option for running withh CRC enabled. I wan't to use kiss mode over an extended distance to some "remote" TNCs co-located with their transcei

I also disagree that packet radio is dead, at least, outside of hyperdeveloped technologically based societies8-) I believe that some people have right to grow tired, and change goals. That's OK, but the sky is not falling. >From what I read, packet is much alive in Europe. Also it seems to

future of packet radio (was: Packet radio is Over)

1999-02-15 Thread cmcdonld
I think the only way we will see packet radio in the future is if we can get the speeds above 9600 baud say 28.8 or even 56k at a cost that most hams can afford. If we could get speeds above 9600 a packet internet would be possible and I think it is about time we creat one becau

Hello, after a little break, I am back again to this list. We finally managed to get Linux (Kernel 2.0.36) and xfbbd up and running. Besides a small problem with xfbbd (seems there is trouble in its communcation with the kernel sockets, sometimes) that I put an inquiry for solution for in th

Hello all, I have a PC/Flexnet node with radios connected, and a Linux system, with ax.25 and kiss modules. The system works fine in ax.25, but to make it working on ax.25 I had to put by hand arp entries on arp table. i have put axparms -route add flx default i1ylm-2 and ax.25 connection pass t

Thanks for your reply Klaus. I just can't believe that the 8530 based cards do not seem to work properly with the PC buss on 386 and above. Especially considering that this chip is so well documented and rated at very high speeds. Is it a problem with the hardware design of the card? Or is it rela

Well, Zilog offers a Z16C30 evaluation board for a quite reasonable price (don't know the US price, maybe $150). From the docs I see that it needs some minor hardware tweaking in order to interface with reasonable modems. On the software side, a new driver has to be written. I might do this when I
