Well, you asked to see my setup.
I have an AMD athlon 800 Thunderbird.
I really believe in lots of memory.
Here is the output of free while playing mp3's. Memory is so cheap now
that I have max'ed out my MB.

Ok, now that I have my laptop back (had loaned it out today) I
I forgot just what your configuration was, but, maybe you can make the
permissions on your /dev/dsp or whatever static, and permit only your user
to access this device. BTW, I play my mp3's from a remote box (remote xsession)
and don't have any trouble.
Have you tried playing your mp3's from a vi

I am delving deeper into procmailrc. Very nice once you get over the shock.
The man page says that the recipe regular expression are fed to the
internal egrep literally. I am having trouble feeding options to egrep:

llama, i don't deal with pcmcia anything, but what is the issue with
pcmcia that source has to be rebuilt from non-kernel sources? Aren't the
kernel pcmcia good enuff? is it _

The recommended & traditional place to put the kernel source is under
/usr/src/linux. I'm farily cert
Ok. So, since I built my 2.4.18 in /root/linux, I would need to move that
into /usr/src? Then since the originasl pcmcia-cs was an rpm, I need to
remove that rpm and install the pcmcia-cs tarball in /usr/src and then have
it build modules for the different kernels from there?
Sorry, I feel real
No. You're forgetting that you're dealing with modules, and modules get
installed under /lib/modules/

Well that bites. If I understand it all correctly then I can only have
pcmcia-cs used on one kernel, no matter how many kernels revs I have on my
machine. That means each time I want to use a different kernel on my system I
have to uninstall and reinstall pcmcia-cs? Seems there must be a way. O
You can't do that. You must rebuild pcmcia-cs for each kernel that you
use. See http://pcmcia-cs.sf.net

I'll have to see if I can figure out why, but the kernel modules do not seem
to work while the pcmcia-cs modules do.
I'm going to try renaming /lib/modules/2.4.8 and then remove pcmcia-cs and
then install pcmcia-cs to the 2.4.18 kernel, rename 2.4.8 back to normal and
see if it kept all the mod
THe key thing to remember with pcmcia-cs is that its nothing more than a
few binaries (which are not kernel version dependent), and some modules,
which are kernel version dependent. The modules are functionally, no
different than any other kernel module that you'd use.

A *really* easy way to determine if this is videocard or monitor,
without having to swap any parts is to take a screenshot of the
offending part of the screen. If the shadows appear in the screen shot,
then its the videocard. If they don't appear, its the monitor.
BTW, my money is on the monito

Suddenly, I am getting shadows on my screen.
In a xterm window, each line with text has a faint dark band going
across the entire line. This also appears in html documents while
web surfing.
I have played with my monitor settings, but the lines won't go away.
Question? Is this failing hardware?

I need advice on what to do. I use mandrake 8.1 and it appears on install of
mandrake that it applied pcmcia modules from the pcmcia-cs rpm into
/lib/modules/2.4.8. I have now built the 2.4.18 kernel and need to know how I
can apply the pcmcia-cs rpm to get the modules into /lib/modules/2.4.18.
