is there any way to set some consoles for the
workstations...
would TELNET_SESSION entry
work?
I tried using the dhcpd.conf linked in the contribs section for booting
ThinkNICs by means of PXE. It doesn't work.. I don't even get dhcp.
Prior to this, my LTSP terminal based on a Boot ROM was working fine. I
tried putting in just the lines pertaining to the ThinkNIC to this working
dhcpd.
Unless you've been under a rock, you'll know that there's a discussion
at Slashdot right now on thin clients. LTSP gets quite a few kudos.

David,
I suspect that is part of a security measure.
Because TFTP is udp based, and that is "connectionless", my guess
is that tftpd is doing a DNS lookup for every single block that
the client requests.
If you ran Ethereal on that network segment, you'd be able to see
what is happening.

David,
Thanks really interesting news. I haven't tried the update yet,
and based on your experience, I'll wait till I hear what you
find out.

Scott Balneaves ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) is the author of
metermaid. I don't think he's made any changes
to it in a while, but I know it's not a dead project.
We've got lots of uses for it, we just lack the time
to get to everything we want to.

Bruno,
You need to make sure that all of the services are started.
That is TFTP, DHCP, NFS, XDMCP.
You can start all of those services manually, or you can just
reboot the server and the services should come up.
Then, turn on the workstation.

John,
I've got a new answer and I think it is the best way to handle this.
It turns out that you just need to tell XFree86 4.1.0 to use less
memory on the video card.
You noticed that it was trying to use 8192k of memory and reported
that only 3068 was available. So, the thing to do is tell

Mike,
There is probably a DiskOnChip or Flash Disk module inside the
Winterm. There may also be a floppy or ide header inside the
unit, on the motherboard. This is probably unlikely though.
If it is a DiskOnChip from M-Systems, you will need either
a DOC programmer card that can be inserted in
Marvin,
Either you are missing the gdbm.h header file, or it is not
where metermaid is expecting to find it.
on my Redhat7.2 system, I have 2 gdbm.h files. One is
in /usr/include/gdbm.h, and the other is /usr/include/gdbm/gdbm.h
On your system, do a 'locate gdbm.h' and see where it is.

I tried updating a server to the latest Redhat kernel yesterday, with
very poor results. Loading the LTSP kernel on a workstation usually
takes a second or two; with the latest kernel on the server, it took
three minutes, plus another fifteen to finish booting. I tried it
twice, then backed the

How do people normally logout/shutdown LTSP terminals?
So far, with just the one Book PC displaying GNOME, I notice that logging
out and switching off the terminal often prevents logging in again,
depending on whether the server is a) waiting for login or b) logged in to a
GNOME session.
Thanks
Hi,
I miss some more documentation to run Metermaid
correctly.
Is this package still in development?

hi again *g*
so, now I have all packages installed, and ran the install-script.
what else to do with the server ? dhcp is ready, i think. dns is ready,
and tftp is running too.
do I have to do anything else ?!?

Many thanks for the rapid replies. It was easiest to insert 64Mb RAM, and
the Book PC works fine on that. Still very noisy though, that's probably
what killed it as a "Home Entertainment Centre".
I'll try the other suggestions when using up the leftover 32Mb RAM!

Or you can do like I did a long time ago and hack a custom version of
the kernel for those workstations which increases the minimum allocated
memory in 16-32MB RAM size from 4MB allocated (3MB realized) to 10MB
allocated (9MB realized). It's in the agpgart.c/h files in the kernel
source. Hav
Hello,
I downloaded the "metermaid" package from LTSP download site and I encounter problems
in my "make" command. It was looking for a "gdbm.h" file in my system. So I decided
to look for a similar file from one of the cooker site of Mandrake (I am using
Mandrake 8.1) and I was able to find

Hi,
If you are running RedHat or Mandrake based distro on your server, you should
use /lts/Boot/bootp/vmlinuz.all.boot and forget about the leading tftpboot. or
you can check in linuxconf what path is used to start tftp server (-s option)

Hi Dainius
did you try to put a / in front of the pathnaname?
like: 192.168.0.254:/tftpboot/lts/boot/bootp/vmlinuz.all.boot
?
I asume that the pathname itself is correct...
