If I run wireless LTSP on a laptop is there then any way that I can
monitor the local battery condition on that laptop?

Hey *,
1) You can create the sym link as root, then the user can't remove it
or
2) You can simply make the prefs.js file immutible using chattr +i
Also, you probably want to set the number of backup prefs files to 0.

Unfortunately this does not stop them from replacing the symbolic link
with their own prefs.js and modifying to their hearts content.

as the username.
Then set the owner on the /home/username to root:username and the perms

Put prefs.js in a higher level directory, say /home/students/prefs.js
and set it to be read only for everyone except the owner (root).
Then, in each student's .phoenix/default directory, replace prefs.js with:
ln -s /home/students/prefs.js prefs.js
You could script that as well.
